If you’ve been following Overwatch 2 on Twitch, you’re probably familiar with Fitzy, the expert on the game’s hacking DPS hero, Sombra. As a Top 500 Sombra main, players have eagerly awaited his thoughts on her rework. Fitzy, however, took a cautious approach and thoroughly playtested Sombra on the competitive ladder for a week before sharing his findings.
After 40 hours of gameplay and a 50% win rate in 201 games, Fitzy has some interesting data to share. He highlights five key points about the Sombra rework:
- Kiriko makes playing Sombra extremely frustrating.
- Spawn killing is highly effective.
- Sombra can easily defeat any DPS hero in a 1v1, but struggles against supports.
- EMP is underwhelming and best used for solo kills.
- The “Sombra 76” strategy works well when both teams have Sigma, but otherwise it’s better to off-angle and harass the enemy backline.
It’s no surprise that Kiriko, with her ability to cleanse allies, poses a significant challenge to Sombra. Sombra’s new ability, Virus, relies on damage over time, which can be neutralized by Kiriko’s cleansing.
The limited viability of the “Sombra 76” strategy is an interesting finding. While Sombra is typically seen as a flanking hero, her rework aimed to encourage more team play. Some players, including Fitzy, had hoped that Sombra could be played as a DPS hero who sticks with the team rather than constantly flanking.
Adapting to the Sombra rework will take time for players accustomed to using her teleport to escape after eliminating a support. However, Fitzy’s findings suggest that there are still viable strategies to explore with the new Sombra.
