Due to leaked copies, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is now being emulated on PC. Modders have taken advantage of this opportunity to make some changes that go against Nintendo’s values.
Contendo, a well-known modder of Nintendo games, recently shared a video on Twitter showcasing a new addition to Wonder: swearing flowers. In the video, Mario encounters these seemingly innocent flowers, but instead of sweet phrases, they start cursing at him, saying, ‘Fuck you!’
Nintendo games are typically rated E for everyone and do not contain any obscenities. Understandably, Nintendo is taking action to remove all videos and content promoting these mods with cursing words. They want to protect their reputation as a family-friendly studio and ensure that people understand these mods do not represent the official, unmodded release of Wonder.
Modders claim that it was relatively easy to mod the new release, as it shares formats with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom. They already had knowledge of the modding work and code, so adding the desired content was the only remaining step.
Nintendo has been trying to combat the trend of game leaks and mods, but their efforts have not been entirely successful. The quick emulation of Wonder is evidence of this. It remains to be seen if Nintendo will find a solution to this issue and effectively prevent modded content in the future.
