Wayfinder: A Promising Yet Flawed MMO Lite

Xavier Ward

Wayfinder, an MMO lite game, initially faced a disastrous launch with long queues, glitches, and crashes. Despite its tarnished reputation, I decided to give it a try. With stunning visuals, satisfying combat, and a charming art style, Wayfinder managed to captivate me. However, the game’s dwindling playerbase can be attributed to its repetitive and grindy nature, as well as numerous technical issues.

What is Wayfinder?

Wayfinder, launched in August 2023, is an MMO lite game that features a persistent world, communal hub area, three-player PvE dungeons, and outdoor explorable zones. Unlike traditional RPGs, players must craft or buy characters instead of creating their own. There are six initial characters, each with four unique abilities. Wayfinders can use any weapon, allowing for some customization. The gameplay loop revolves around grinding dungeons for XP and materials to craft new Wayfinders.

The Good: Stunning Visuals and Satisfying Combat

Wayfinder’s visual design is a standout feature, with its vibrant and charming art style. The game’s world is visually stunning, reminiscent of Ratchet and Clank and Wildstar. The hub area, Skylight, blends fantasy and magi-punk elements seamlessly. The playable characters, the Wayfinders, are colorful and eccentric, each offering a different gameplay style. Combat, while basic, is enjoyable and serves as a solid foundation for the game.

The Bad: Repetitive, Grindy, and Stretched Thin

Wayfinder suffers from a lack of content, spreading it too thin. Players are required to grind dungeons repeatedly, which quickly becomes tedious. The quests also involve repetitive back-and-forth between the Highlands and Skylight, making the gameplay feel stretched and monotonous. Additionally, the game’s loading times are long, and technical glitches and crashes are common.

The Ugly: Queues, Loading Screens, and Glitches Galore

Wayfinder’s technical issues are a major drawback. The game frequently crashes, requiring players to quit and relaunch. Loading times are lengthy, often leading to frustration. Surprisingly, the game still has login queues, indicating server problems. These issues, combined with the focus on monetization rather than fixing the game, further contribute to its flaws.

Is Wayfinder Worth Playing?

Despite its appealing visuals and enjoyable combat, Wayfinder falls short due to its lack of substantial content and technical issues. The game’s current form is difficult to recommend until meaningful updates are made, including new open world areas, dungeons, and quests. However, if these improvements are implemented, Wayfinder has the potential to become a more engaging and worthwhile experience.
