Pokémon’s Unusual American Psycho Crossover Creates Social Media Buzz

Tim Price

Pokémon has a history of unique and bizarre advertisements, but their latest promotion on TikTok might just take the cake. On October 21, the official Pokémon account shared a video referencing the famous business card scene from the dark satire movie American Psycho, revealing an upcoming card named Larry.

The short video features three Pokémon – Quagsire, Marshtomp, and Slowpoke – showcasing their Larry card during a meeting. Three versions of the card are revealed, with the Larry Ultra Rare being the most coveted, featuring a unique design and shiny coating.

What makes this crossover even more unexpected is that the video incorporates real sounds from American Psycho’s iconic business card scene, with the Marshtomp plush even wearing Patrick Bateman’s glasses and voicing Christian Bale’s lines.

The video quickly gained traction on social media, amassing over 100,000 shares on TikTok, 500,000 views, and sparking a heated response from fans. While many praised the move, others expressed confusion at the unusual combination of the dark American Psycho with the typically cute world of Pokémon.

This isn’t the first time Pokémon has ventured into unconventional collaborations. In 2000, they teamed up with Heinz to release Pokémon-shaped pasta, accompanied by an iconic ad. More recently, a TCG collaboration was planned with Katy Perry, Post Malone, and J Balvin, featuring unique card designs, although it didn’t come to fruition.

While American Psycho may seem out of place in the Pokémon universe, its success lies in the fact that the franchise appeals to fans of all ages, even nearly 30 years after its creation. The strength of the Pokémon brand lies in its ability to bring together diverse audiences, and unexpected ads like this capitalize on that potential.

By embracing unusual crossovers and leveraging its broad appeal, Pokémon continues to captivate fans and create social media buzz.
