CS2 Fans Campaign for Australian Major Following IEM Sydney Success

Derek Morgan

CS2 players and fans are rallying behind a campaign urging Valve to organize a Major tournament in Australia. The call comes after the resounding success of IEM Sydney, which marked the first major event for CS2 esports in the country. The electrifying atmosphere created by the crowd has left everyone convinced that Australia deserves its own Major.

The inaugural IEM Sydney event concluded with an incredible display of passion from the crowd, making the competition even more memorable for all involved. Notably, veteran player karrigan, who has been competing since the Counter-Strike: 1.6 days, was thoroughly impressed by the show put on by the Australian fans. He even took the time to interact with the crowd during FaZe Clan’s matches and afterwards, he made a heartfelt plea to Valve for an Australian Major.

One of the factors working in favor of the Australian crowd is their ability to create an amazing atmosphere for all teams, regardless of the absence of Australian teams in the playoffs or their best player, Justin “jks” Savage, not making it to the grand finals. In contrast, some other crowds have been criticized for only showing enthusiasm when local teams are playing.

However, there is a challenge to bringing a Major tournament of this magnitude to Australia, and that is the issue of time zones. Matches would be played at inconvenient times for a Western audience. Nevertheless, Australian fans have already come up with a solution to address this concern. They propose hosting the Major in Perth, which has a seven-hour time difference from Europe. This would allow matches to start at 4:30 pm local time, translating to 9:30 am in Europe, 9:30 pm on the U.S. East Coast, and 6:30 pm on the U.S. West Coast. Some fans even suggest that Perth should become the official esports capital of Australia.

With the location for the second CS2 Major still undecided, Valve has a unique opportunity to bring the Major to Australia in 2024. The first CS2 Major is set to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark in early 2024.
