Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have joined forces with Marvel to bring the iconic superheroes into the world of Magic: The Gathering. This exciting collaboration will introduce a multi-set series featuring Marvel characters, expanding the Universes Beyond IP library. Fans can expect these new sets to be released in 2025.
The Universes Beyond products in the MTG trading card game are typically playable in Eternal formats like Commander, Vintage, Pauper, and Legacy. While there may be exceptions, such as the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set, which launched earlier this year, the Marvel crossover is expected to follow a similar path.
Marvel’s President of Comics and Franchise, Dan Buckley, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that trading cards have always been a part of Marvel’s DNA. He believes that the depth of Marvel’s storytelling and characters will seamlessly translate into gameplay within the Magic: The Gathering products and sets for years to come.
To give fans a taste of what’s to come, a trailer was released alongside the announcement. The trailer features a child engrossed in a Marvel comic book, holding Mjolnir and Captain America’s shield. From one of the comic books, an MTG card drops, hinting at the upcoming crossover. Unfortunately, only the backside of the card is shown, leaving fans eager for more details.
This collaboration between Marvel and Hasbro is part of the ongoing expansion of the Universes Beyond IP library. In August, a list of future Magic and Universes Beyond sets was revealed, providing names for every MTG set through 2026. While specific set names and products for the Marvel crossover have not been disclosed yet, they are expected to be announced closer to the launch dates in 2025.
The code name “Volleyball” stands out among the upcoming sets, described by WotC as having a science fiction space opera theme. While Star Wars may come to mind when thinking of space opera, it could also include a wide range of Marvel comic book characters. Both Marvel and Star Wars have their own TCG products, such as Star Wars Unlimited and Marvel Snap, respectively.
Fans can look forward to the seamless integration of Marvel’s beloved characters into the Magic: The Gathering universe. The collaboration promises to bring exciting gameplay experiences and expand the possibilities for both Marvel and MTG fans alike. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated crossover event.
