Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Fans Praise New Voice Actor for Mario

Tim Price

Since its release on Oct. 20, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has sparked discussions among players about the new voice of the beloved Italian plumber. While many still miss Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario, fans are finding Kevin Afghani’s portrayal to be a delightful surprise.

In August 2023, Charles Martinet announced his departure as the voice of Mario, transitioning into a Nintendo ambassador role. Nintendo released a heartfelt video where Martinet bid farewell to his fans, leaving the community curious about who would take over the iconic character. Fortunately, Kevin Afghani, known for his work in Dragon Ball R&R and Genshin Impact, has proven to be an excellent choice according to Nintendo enthusiasts.

Players of Super Mario Bros. Wonder have taken to Reddit to express their thoughts on Afghani’s voice for Mario (and Luigi). While the actor doesn’t attempt to imitate Martinet directly, he manages to capture the essence of the character while adding his own unique touch, creating a sense of familiarity with a fresh twist.

Charles Martinet voiced Mario for over three decades, giving the character memorable catchphrases like ‘Let’s-a-go,’ ‘Wa-hoo,’ and the beloved ‘It’s-a-me.’ Although Afghani has big shoes to fill, Super Mario Bros. Wonder players have already embraced his catchy line, ‘Wowie Zowie.’ Afghani himself expressed gratitude to the fans via a heartfelt tweet.

“I cannot begin to express how wonderful all of your reactions have been. I truly wish I could respond to each and every one of you, but I might explode if I tried. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.” – Kevin Afghani (@KevinAfghani) October 15, 2023

It’s important to note that Charles Martinet also voiced Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and various other characters in addition to Mario. Can Afghani successfully step into these enormous shoes? Only time will tell, but so far, he seems to be handling the challenge admirably.

If you’re still undecided about getting the new Super Mario game, perhaps our review can assist you in making a decision.
