G2 Esports, a prominent League of Legends team, has sparked controversy by publicly sharing their scrim results just days after being eliminated from the World Championship. The move has divided the LoL community, with some expressing their disapproval, including Team Liquid’s owner, Steve Arhancet. While fans may be interested in seeing these results, many believe it is not appropriate to disclose them while other teams are still competing.
Traditionally, scrim results have been kept confidential within the LoL community, especially when facing international opponents. Therefore, it is understandable that some teams prefer to keep their results private, particularly during the most significant tournament of the year. In this case, G2 revealed that they won seven out of ten scrim matches against Team Liquid.
However, it is worth noting that scrim results did not necessarily translate into success for G2 at the World Championship. Despite their dominant performance in practice matches, the team struggled on the main stage, losing three consecutive best-of-three series and failing to advance to the knockout stage. Interestingly, G2 had positive records in scrims against NRG Esports, Bilibili Gaming, and Gen.G, the very teams that ultimately eliminated them from Worlds.
Some members of the community have questioned the purpose of leaking scrim results, suggesting that G2’s decision may be influenced by their reputation as the best scrim team in European history. Former G2 head coach, GrabbZ, also expressed skepticism about the significance of scrim results, citing the example of DAMWON Gaming, who performed well in scrims but were defeated by G2 in the 2019 world finals.
While G2’s decision to share their scrim results may encourage other teams to do the same in the future, it is unlikely to become a widespread practice. The mixed reaction from the community and the team’s underwhelming performance at Worlds make it a difficult choice to justify. Additionally, the taboo nature of sharing scrim results is likely to deter other teams from following suit.
The World Championship will resume on November 2nd with the quarterfinal match between NRG and Weibo Gaming.
