Europe’s Failure at LoL Worlds 2023: The Missing Top Laners

Tim Price

Former Fnatic mid laner turned streamer, Tim “Nemesis” Lipovšek, believes he knows why Europe failed to make an impact at the League of Legends World Championship 2023. According to Nemesis, the absence of the two best top laners, Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau and Martin “Wunder” Hansen, is to blame.

Nemesis argues that it’s no surprise Europe struggled when their top talent was not on the field. In his opinion, Bwipo and Wunder are the region’s strongest top laners, and their absence greatly impacted Europe’s performance.

Bwipo, known for his time with Fnatic and later Team Liquid, has since transitioned into a content creator role. There are currently no indications of him returning to professional play in the near future.

Wunder, renowned for his exceptional performances with G2 and unique champion picks like top lane Ryze and Gragas, joined Fnatic in December 2021. However, he is currently replaced by Óscar “Oscarinin” Jiménez.

Both Bwipo and Wunder have consistently proven themselves as top-tier players who can rival the skill and pressure of their Asian counterparts. Their extensive champion pools and mechanical prowess have been sorely missed in Europe’s gameplay this year.

Their deep understanding of the game, willingness to experiment with new picks, ability to make game-winning plays, and leadership qualities were instrumental in their teams’ success.

As the offseason for pro players approaches, there is hope that Bwipo and Wunder may be picked up for the 2024 season, potentially bringing back Europe’s former glory.
