Quagsire vs Clodsire: The Battle of the Pokémon Cult Favorites

superadmin

It’s been almost a year since Paldean Wooper and its evolution Clodsire were introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and fans are still passionately debating which regional variant of the Wooper evolution line reigns supreme.

Quagsire, the original Wooper evolution, has long held a special place in the hearts of a dedicated group of Pokémon fans. Its adorable and simple design has garnered a cult following, not necessarily for its competitive prowess in the game, but for its sheer cuteness.

However, with the arrival of Clodsire—the Poison-type version of the Pokémon based in the Paldea region—some fans have switched their allegiance to this spiky and toxic companion.

In a recent Reddit thread, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players posed the ultimate question to the community: “Which side are you on?”

While many responders couldn’t definitively choose between the two, they insisted that both Pokémon have their own merits and deserve love. One trainer commented, “There is no conflict. The sires are one, keeping each other in balance. Applaud the Clod, acquire the Sire.”

Since the introduction of Paldean Wooper in 2022, the longstanding Quagsire fandom has warmly embraced the new poisonous addition to the family. There has never been any real contention between the two Pokémon species or their fans.

Many Japanese Twitter accounts, which have been sharing Quagsire artwork for years, happily welcomed Clodsire into the fold through their art. One post even depicted the pair living together in harmony.

Artist Porter, who has been running an Etsy shop specializing in Quagsire creations since 2020, quickly incorporated Clodsire into their work. “I fell in love with Clodsire right away and immediately started producing an enamel pin of it,” Porter told Dot Esports.

“I love the idea of Quagsire and Clodsire being a pair. Even in official promos, they’ve been shown together as friends. That was my intention behind my own promo in April 2023—Muddy Buddies!”

Aside from the artistic endeavors of Quagsire fans, the Pokémon hasn’t fared as well in the VGC world. Despite its long-standing use as a defensive shield in Pokémon games, the addition of Clodsire to the universe has led to a surge in Quagsire’s usage in both casual and competitive play. This was evident in the recent Pokémon Go Community Day, which featured both Paldean Wooper and Clodsire.

With Clodsire now a viable option, all four Pokémon—Wooper, Paldean Wooper, Quagsire, and Clodsire—are gaining new fans every day. Japanese toy company Takara Tomy recently announced the release of a 35-inch Clodsire plush, complete with two sleepy Paldean Wooper companions, set to launch in April next year.

The original Pokémon Center Comfy Cuddlers line of plush toys is also bringing back Quagsire and introducing Clodsire into the lineup, initially available in Japan. While the Quagsire plush was previously sold in the United States Pokémon Center, both will be limited edition, so fans of Clodsire and Quagsire should act quickly if the plushes become available worldwide.

Overall, it’s evident that most longtime Quagsire enthusiasts have wholeheartedly embraced Clodsire into the family. There is no Game of Thrones-style rivalry between these two beloved Pokémon!
