Alan Wake 2 is the latest game to encounter difficulties on the Xbox Series S, which has a significant drawback. While the lower-spec Microsoft console offers a more affordable option for current-gen gaming, it lacks the power of its counterpart, the Xbox Series X, and other consoles.
As a result, game developers have had to make concessions when delivering titles for the Xbox Series S. Unfortunately, Alan Wake 2 will not have a Performance Mode like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions.
In an interview with IGN on October 7th, Remedy’s communications director, Thomas Puha, explained the reason behind this decision. He stated that the GPU on the Xbox Series S poses a “pretty big problem.” Despite this, the team is working diligently to ensure that the visual quality remains high. Puha compared the situation to lower-spec PCs struggling to match high-spec models, emphasizing the need for acceptance of these differences.
Puha highlighted the massive price difference between the Xbox Series S and the Series X or PS5. He also mentioned that scaling, which is possible on PC due to memory, does not work with the Series S.
It is important to note that if players want to experience Alan Wake 2 in all its “next-gen glory,” they will need to opt for platforms other than the Xbox Series S. This issue is not unique to Alan Wake 2, as other games have faced similar challenges.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 was delayed due to split-screen issues with the Xbox Series S. However, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, denied any parity issues, and the game is now set to launch on Microsoft consoles by the end of 2023.
