Wang “Ame” Chunyu, the Uncrowned King of Dota 2, has solidified his place in history thanks to a heartfelt gesture by Illya “Yatoro” Mulyarchuk following their victory at The International 2023.
When a team emerges victorious at TI, both the players and the organization’s name are engraved onto the prestigious Aegis of Champions. This tradition holds true in both the real world and the Dota 2 realm. Valve requests players to submit their usernames for this occasion, and Yatoro made a special decision to include the Kanji character next to his name, pronounced as “Ame.”
According to machine translations, this character translates to “rain” in Japanese, and interestingly, it is also pronounced as “yu” in Chinese, similar to Ame’s real name. Despite Ame’s numerous close calls in lifting the Aegis himself, he always fell just short of claiming the ultimate victory.
Yatoro has expressed his deep admiration for Ame on multiple occasions, openly stating that he extensively studies Ame’s gameplay to learn from him.
In 2018, OG triumphed over PSG.LGD to secure The International 8 championship. Then, in 2021, Team Spirit shocked the world by defeating PSG.LGD to claim victory at The International 10. Ame’s TI journey also includes third and fourth-place finishes.
Dota 2 fans firmly believed that Ame would eventually seize the TI title for himself. However, the star player surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from competitive Dota 2, alongside Lu “Somnus” Yao. Unfortunately, both players left the scene without a crown, leading Somnus to reconsider his retirement and make a comeback.
Ame, on the other hand, has remained committed to his retired life, only returning to pro Dota 2 to form a Chinese super team for the 19th Asian Games. While Ame may still have the opportunity to pursue another shot at glory, his name will forever be etched alongside Yatoro’s on the Aegis, ensuring his legacy lives on.
