The developers of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Daedelic, recently issued an apology on Twitter following the game’s disastrous release. However, their apology turned out to be just as disappointing as the game itself.
After facing multiple delays, Daedelic Entertainment finally unveiled The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in May of this year. Unfortunately, the game was met with harsh criticism and backlash from fans of the franchise.
Players expressed their dissatisfaction with various issues in the Middle-earth-based stealth game, including major glitches, subpar visuals, and poorly developed mechanics. It seems that Gollum should have stayed hidden in the cave a little longer to receive proper polishing.
The day after the game’s launch, the German developers took to Twitter to apologize to their fans. In their statement, they expressed their sincere regret for the underwhelming experience and promised to provide patches to enhance the game’s enjoyment. However, it has come to light that this public apology was allegedly generated using ChatGPT.
Former employees of Daedelic Entertainment have now come forward in a documentary on YouTube to share their frustrations and reveal the truth about their past employers. Among their grievances, they claim that the team was not informed about the apology statement before its release.
The documentary also alleges that the apology was indeed generated using ChatGPT. One glaring detail that gave it away was the misspelling of the game’s title. Nacon, the publisher, didn’t even bother to proofread their apology letter.
Since then, several Twitter accounts have published their own ChatGPT-generated apology statements. Strikingly, these statements bear a striking resemblance to the one released by Nacon in May. For many fans of The Lord of the Rings franchise, this insincere apology only added insult to injury.
According to a report from German site Games Wirtschaft on June 30, Daedelic Entertainment has abandoned its game development endeavors and shifted its focus solely to publishing and marketing.
