Armor Effects in Halo Infinite: Ugly and Unpopular

Derek Morgan

In Halo Infinite, armor effects are meant to add visual flair to your Spartan character. However, many players find these effects to be unattractive and not worth using. A recent Reddit thread discussed the decline in popularity of armor effects and players didn’t hold back in expressing their dissatisfaction. This criticism is further compounded by the ongoing scrutiny of microtransactions in Halo Infinite’s free-to-play model.

One player pointed out that armor effects used to be a novelty when they were difficult to obtain and there were only a limited number of them available. However, now there are so many effects that they have lost their appeal. In previous Halo games like Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, acquiring armor effects required a high rank and a significant amount of in-game credits. This gave them a sense of prestige that is lacking in Halo Infinite’s paid effects.

Some players have always found armor effects, including those in Reach, to be cheesy and unappealing. They argue that the effects have only gotten worse in Halo Infinite. One of the main technical issues mentioned is that the armor effects appear to be animated at a lower frame rate than the rest of the game. This, combined with the effects being considered ugly, contributes to their overall unpopularity. Additionally, effects featuring fire are criticized for having low texture and appearing two-dimensional, unlike their counterparts in previous Halo titles.

However, not all armor effects are disliked by players. Some more subtle effects, such as Trapmaster’s Map and Inevitability of War, which affect specific areas of the Spartan’s body, are praised for their “lore-friendly” aesthetic that aligns with Infinite’s grounded science fiction art style.

As a player who owns many of the available armor effects, I also find myself only using a handful of them regularly. While fixing the technical issues with existing effects may make them more appealing, it seems that players are more interested in new effects that better complement the armor underneath them and fit within the game’s aesthetic.
