Larian Studios has put a lot of effort into the details of Baldur’s Gate 3, which is likely to earn recognition during award season. However, players have recently discovered some questionable storytelling in the latter half of the game.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t reached the end of Act Two. While the game has been out for a while, its recent release on console means it’s new to some players.
In Act Three, players learn that the “dream visitor” is actually an Illithid in disguise known as the Emperor. He was once a Balduran but turned into a Mind Flayer after being captured while searching for treasure at Moonrise Towers.
A Reddit post on Nov. 27 raised concerns about inconsistencies in the story. Despite the Emperor admitting to being turned into an Illithid at Moonrise Towers, they act surprised about the presence of Illithids in Moonrise Towers during Act Two.
The original poster questioned, “If he knows there is a Mind Flayer colony beneath Moonrise, why does he act surprised and not warn the player? True, he probably wanted to maintain his disguise, but he repeatedly mentions being infected as well.”
The comment section of the thread is filled with players making fun of the Emperor’s reputation for deceit and manipulation throughout the game. Some players see it as a “hard lesson.” Others note that the Emperor constantly tries to persuade the player to become an Illithid by consuming more tadpoles.
From a storytelling perspective, the lack of a detailed warning from the Emperor about Moonrise is intentional. Larian wanted to keep players questioning the Emperor’s motives. Additionally, since the Emperor was turned into a Mind Flayer a long time ago, they may not have known the true extent of the Absolute’s control over Moonrise.
