Blizzard Confirms No Wrath of the Lich King Classic Servers After Cataclysm Classic Launch

In a recent interview, Blizzard has confirmed that there will be no Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) Classic servers after the launch of Cataclysm Classic. This decision has left many players disappointed, as WotLK is widely regarded as one of the best expansions in World of Warcraft.

During a Q&A session following Blizzcon, Blizzard provided more details about their upcoming expansions – The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan – as well as the release of WoW Cataclysm Classic servers. Similar to the Burning Crusade Classic servers, Blizzard plans to shut down all WotLK servers to focus on the newest classic expansion.

However, this announcement has sparked backlash from players who believe that Blizzard should keep at least a few WotLK servers active. The original WotLK expansion saw a peak WoW population of 11.5 million players, making it a beloved and cherished part of the game’s history.

Many current WoW players are now considering switching to private servers that specifically cater to the WotLK expansion. While players will have the option to transfer their characters to the new expansion, it is expected that most players will shift their focus to the latest content.

Although Blizzard has repeatedly stated that they have no plans for WotLK classic servers, they have expressed openness to fan feedback. It remains uncertain whether they will reconsider their decision and introduce classic servers for WotLK or even the Burning Crusade expansions.

One possible solution could be for Blizzard to take inspiration from Everquest and create progression servers. These servers start with the base game and gradually introduce new expansions over time, allowing players to experience the content in the order it was originally released.

Throughout its nearly 20-year existence, World of Warcraft has seen players come and go, each with their own preferred expansion. While it is understandable for Blizzard to focus on future expansions, there is still a demand for servers that cater to those who yearn for the nostalgia of the good old days of WoW.
