Around 100 employees, accounting for eight percent of the entire staff, were laid off by Bungie, the creator of Destiny 2. The decision came after the company revealed that its expected revenue for the year was 45 percent below projections. The layoffs were unexpected and followed a meeting where Bungie CEO Pete Parsons attributed the revenue shortfall to weak player retention after the disappointing Lightfall expansion. Laid-off employees received three months of severance and health insurance, but other benefits ceased immediately. The layoffs affected various departments, including art, player support, recruitment, legal, and QA. Additionally, the release date for the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, has been delayed from February to June. This news follows criticism from the community regarding Lightfall, which was considered a filler DLC with an unsatisfying storyline. The Final Shape is expected to conclude the light and darkness saga of Destiny 2 with a final battle against The Witness. Bungie now joins other Sony-owned studios, Naughty Dog and Media Molecule, in experiencing layoffs in 2023.
