Bungie recently hinted at the introduction of a special ammo auto rifle in an upcoming expansion for Destiny 2. In a post discussing weapon balancing, the development team mentioned that auto rifles currently use primary ammo, but teased the possibility of a special or heavy ammo auto rifle in the future.
During the Destiny 2 Showcase 2023, Bungie revealed a new support frame auto rifle subfamily that will be released with The Final Shape expansion on Feb. 27, 2024. This support frame auto rifle will allow players to seamlessly switch between attacking enemies and healing allies.
The community speculates that the support frame auto rifle will be a special ammo weapon or a hybrid of special and primary ammo. This makes sense as infinite healing through primary ammo would be unbalanced. The hybrid option would allow players to use special ammo for both shooting and killing, eliminating the need to choose between the two.
Some players remain skeptical about the support weapon concept, as Destiny 2 does not currently have a dedicated support role. Each class already has tools for survival and dealing damage. However, there is potential for a dedicated support Warlock build.
Another possibility is that Bungie is working on an Exotic special auto rifle to release in Season 23, similar to Eriana’s Vow and Forerunner. Fans have suggested that if Cerberus+1 were to be reworked, it should become a special weapon to make it more viable in the game.
Regardless of Bungie’s plans, Season 23 will bring various changes to weapon damage in PvE, a Glaive rework, and multiple Exotic armor changes. Players will have plenty to explore and experiment with until the release of The Final Shape expansion.
