Call of Duty Community Calls for Nerfs to Riot Shield in Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer

Derek Morgan

The Call of Duty community is demanding significant nerfs to the Riot Shield, a melee weapon in Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer. After just two weeks of its introduction, players are already expressing frustration with its overpowered capabilities.

A clip shared on the MW3 subreddit showcased the impenetrable nature of the Riot Shield. In the video, a player attempts to shoot an enemy behind gas silos on Scrapyard, but the shield renders the shots ineffective. The enemy quickly switches to a knife and kills the player without any opportunity for counterplay.

Players argue that the shield’s quick transition from being impenetrable to allowing for a knife throw is unbalanced and not enjoyable to encounter. Additionally, the ability for players to equip multiple primary weapons while still being protected by the shield further exacerbates the issue.

One proposed solution is to heavily reduce the movement speed of players wielding the Riot Shield. Currently, players can move, slide, and bunny hop with ease while using the shield, which many find absurd. Another suggestion is to introduce a durability mechanic, where the shield breaks after sustaining enough bullet or explosive damage. This would provide a countermeasure for high-mobility players who rely on submachine guns or knives and are invulnerable from behind due to the shield.

It is worth noting that the Riot Shield’s melee damage has already been reduced compared to its previous iteration in Modern Warfare 2. In MW2, the shield could one-hit-kill like a knife, whereas now it requires three hits to eliminate an opponent.

While the Riot Shield offers a unique playstyle, it is currently unbalanced. Players hope that Sledgehammer will address these concerns with the launch of season one on December 6.
