A year after the release of Modern Warfare 2, players are still unhappy with the game’s user interface (UI), which remains largely unchanged in the transition to Call of Duty HQ. The new all-in-one application houses multiple games, including Modern Warfare 3, MW2, and Warzone, but the UI has been met with confusion and frustration from the community.
The UI of Call of Duty HQ resembles streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu, utilizing large horizontal blocks for selecting game modes and a vertical sidebar for choosing each game. However, many players find it confusing and have resorted to watching YouTube tutorials to navigate the app.
Despite the negative feedback, Activision defends the design of Call of Duty HQ, considering it an evolution in the franchise. They claim that it simplifies the process of jumping into Call of Duty games, allowing players to focus on their victories rather than figuring out where to launch the game.
However, many players strongly disagree with this assertion. They criticize the UI for its excessive scrolling and lack of organization. Some players argue that previous titles like Modern Warfare 2019 had simpler and less cluttered UIs.
Having a central hub for all Call of Duty titles has proven to be more of a hassle for some players. They question the need to launch one app in order to launch another game, finding it less straightforward than simply launching the desired game directly.
Currently, Call of Duty HQ features six vertical tabs on the left side of the screen, allowing players to select individual games such as MW3, MW2, and Warzone. Once a game is selected, the UI switches to a horizontal layout with additional tiles to choose from. There are also tabs at the top for the battle pass, events, and the store, requiring significant navigation regardless of the player’s objective.
Despite the community’s dissatisfaction, it appears that the current UI is here to stay. Many players express their frustration, labeling it as the worst UI they have encountered in any video game.
