The Call of Duty League (CDL) has unveiled its first ruleset for Modern Warfare 3, which will be implemented throughout the upcoming CDL season. The ruleset includes various limitations that are familiar to esports fans.
While this is the initial version of the ruleset, it is unlikely to undergo significant changes during the season or when the CDL campaign begins on December 8th. In addition to the official restrictions, there are also additional guns that have been included in the “gentlemen’s agreement” (GA) of items not to be used in official competition.
Some of the items included in the GA are burst weapons like the FR 5.56 and DG-58, all knives such as the Karambit, and the use of iron sights on assault rifles. Therefore, the official list is just the starting point for what is not allowed in CDL play.
The current map pool for this year’s CDL consists of Highrise, Invasion, Karachi, Skidrow, Sub Base, and Terminal. Many of the maps from MW2 2009 do not seem suitable for competitive play, particularly in Hardpoint and Control game modes.
Spencer Peterson, CDL’s senior manager of player relations, emphasized that this is only version 1 of the ruleset and it will be updated throughout the season. The CDL continuously evaluates restrictions and maps as new ones are introduced into the game.
In terms of weapon restrictions, all Modern Warfare 2 weapons carried over to MW3 are banned, along with battle rifles, shotguns, marksman rifles, and LMGs from MW3. This means that players will predominantly use the MCW and Rival-9 throughout the season.
Other restrictions include the prohibition of silencers and suppressors, thermal and night vision optics, and most tactical grenades such as flash grenades, shock sticks, and the stim.
It is not uncommon for a large number of items in the game to be restricted in competitive play. Each year, pro players, the competitive community, event organizers, and the CDL collaborate to determine what is viable, what is not, and what needs to be banned.
The CDL season kicks off in just 18 days with online qualifiers for Major One, leading up to a LAN event in Boston in January.
