Chess Bad Boy Hans Niemann Calls Out GothamChess for Clickbait Title

Derek Morgan

Hans Niemann, known for his controversial statements, has criticized popular chess YouTuber Levy “GothamChess” Rozman for using a clickbait title in his video covering Niemann’s game against super-GM Richárd Rapport. Niemann expressed his frustration with the constant reminder of his inadequacy faced by international chess masters and accused some of them of resorting to YouTube clickbait because they lack insightful analysis of actual chess games. He emphasized that he will let his chess skills speak for themselves.

GothamChess responded by pointing out that the Lichess analysis of the game showed no inaccuracies, mistakes, or blunders, and defended his choice of title as a way to generate interest and promote Niemann’s games to a wider audience.

This clash between Niemann and GothamChess is not the first time a chess YouTuber has faced criticism for their video titles. Magnus Carlsen previously called out Hikaru Nakamura for a misleading title that insinuated cheating allegations. The practice of using provocative titles to attract viewers has stirred controversy within the chess community.

Niemann has been involved in previous controversies, including cheating allegations made by Carlsen. While Niemann admitted to cheating online, no evidence of cheating in offline games has been proven. A defamation lawsuit filed by Niemann was settled out of court.

The Grand Swiss Tournament, where Niemann and other top players are competing, still has several rounds remaining. The competition for the Candidates spots is intensifying, and with each round, the drama is expected to increase. Currently, Niemann is engaged in a closely contested match against Alireza Firouzja on table 3.
