Cities: Skylines 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular city-building game, has encountered numerous issues since its launch. Developer Colossal Order has acknowledged the problems and promised to address them. However, the studio has now announced that the release of official modding tools will be delayed by several months, and patch updates for the game will be slower in the future.
According to Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen, the modding tool, known as the Editor, is still being developed and will require a few more months before it can be released. The team is working hard to ensure its quality and functionality. Hallikainen assured players that they will be kept updated on the progress of the Editor’s development.
In addition to the modding tools, Hallikainen also mentioned the console release of Cities: Skylines 2. The console version was initially scheduled for Spring 2024 but was delayed to ensure optimal performance. Colossal Order is striving to release the console version in the first half of 2024, and the patches and updates for the PC version will benefit the console version as well.
The console version of Cities: Skylines 2 will have immediate access to the Editor, which will be fully functional on PC by then. This will allow console players to catch up quickly with their PC counterparts in terms of mods and custom assets. The game will feature its own mod platform, Paradox Mods, instead of relying on Steam Workshop, bridging the gap between PC and consoles.
As a result of these developments, Colossal Order will be reducing the frequency of patch updates for the PC version of Cities: Skylines 2. The focus will now be on addressing more significant issues that require more time and effort to fix. Hallikainen explained that the team is currently working on improving GPU performance and LODs (Level of Detail), which will result in less frequent updates.
Despite the challenges faced by Cities: Skylines 2, the game is gradually recovering from its rocky launch and is expected to reach the same level of success as its predecessor. Players can look forward to the upcoming improvements and additions that will enhance their gaming experience.
