Controversial Changes to VALORANT Smokes Divide Community

Xavier Ward

Riot Games has introduced controversial changes to Astra, Brimstone, and Omen smokes in VALORANT, causing a divide among players. The changes include a visual and audio cue indicating when the smoke will dissipate. Some players argue that this change is unnecessary and lowers the skill ceiling, while others believe it raises the skill floor and provides valuable information for strategic plays.

The new smoke changes display a shiny visual and audio cue, allowing players to know exactly when the smoke will disappear. This eliminates the need for players to memorize timers and enables them to focus on making plays with the given information. Former Fnatic strategic coach, Anderzz, compares this change to when Riot added timers to jungle camps in League of Legends, which initially faced backlash from players who believed tracking timers was an essential skill for high-level junglers.

Anderzz argues that tracking smoke timings should not be a noteworthy skill expression, but rather how players problem solve and play around those timings. The change removes the need for basic arithmetic and counting, allowing players to focus on the real skill expression of utilizing the windows created by smoke timers.

While some players feel that this change makes the game easier across the board, others believe it offers new gameplay opportunities and levels the playing field for lower-ranked players. With the new smoke cues, lower-ranked players can better navigate through smoke without guessing when it will disappear, while higher-ranked players can strategize and create interesting plays around smoke timers with their teammates.

Riot Games is known for continuously tinkering with mechanics in VALORANT, so it is likely that further changes and adjustments will be made based on player feedback and gameplay data.
