The age modification of a character in Honkai: Star Rail has sparked controversy among fans. The developer, miHoYo, recently revealed that the Silvermane Guards’ Intelligence Officer, Pela Sergeyevna, is only 16 years old. This revelation has led to the modification of a previous conversation in the game where Pela is depicted as drunk. However, the attempt to cover up this misstep has been met with criticism.
The controversial content is part of the companion quest “Father Than The Snow Plains,” which focuses on Lynx Landau. In this quest, it is revealed that Lynx and Pela are close friends, and their bond is strengthened by their awkwardness around others. During a camping trip, they find a flash drive dropped by a Trotter, which contains messages from Pela’s deceased mother. It is during this interaction that Pela’s age is confirmed to be much younger than expected.
This discovery has raised questions about a text conversation between Pela and the Trailblazer, where Pela asks for advice on how to get sober. MiHoYo has attempted to modify this conversation by changing the message to “Hey, do you know any way to stave off sleepiness?” However, the responses from the Trailblazer remain the same, leaving the mention of Pela getting sober still present in the game’s files.
Many fans have criticized miHoYo for this mishap, stating that it could have been easily avoided by making Pela of legal drinking age. In China, where miHoYo is based, the legal drinking age is 18, similar to the United Kingdom. Even setting her age at 21, to comply with the legal barrier in the United States, would have been a better solution. Fans argue that it is unrealistic to portray short adults as non-existent, especially when other characters in the game are explained as long-life species.
It remains to be seen if miHoYo will make further changes to address this issue. However, the current attempt to fix the problem has been deemed lazy and incomplete by fans.
