The Hype Was Real, But Not Enough
Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) may have generated a lot of excitement, but it seems that the game did not live up to the expectations in terms of breaking records. Despite the anticipation from players, the numbers indicate that CS2 was unable to surpass the concurrent player record set by its predecessor, CS:GO.
CS:GO’s Record Still Holds Strong
Back in May, CS:GO reached a milestone with 1.8 million concurrent players during its final Major. This record remains unbroken, as CS2 only managed to peak at 1.4 million players during its debut weekend.
A Disappointing Launch
On September 28, the first day of its release, CS2 reached its peak of 1,471,730 players, according to SteamDB. However, since then, the game has failed to reach these heights again. It has maintained similar numbers to those recorded in the days leading up to its release.
Reasons for the Lackluster Performance
There are several factors that could explain why CS2 did not attract more players upon its launch. Many fans believe that the game was rushed and is currently in a subpar state. Additionally, a significant portion of the Counter-Strike community already had access to CS2 through the beta test. Without any new modes or additions for the full launch, there was no compelling reason for them to return.
Botting Problem and Expectations
Some attribute CS:GO’s previous record-breaking peaks to a botting problem. If this is the case, then the numbers from CS2’s launch align with expectations. It is worth noting that like many recent games, CS2 is experiencing growing pains. However, once more content is added and the game’s issues are addressed, it is possible that the current concurrent player record could be challenged.
Try CS2 for Yourself
If you haven’t tried CS2 yet, it is available for everyone on Steam. Despite its initial shortcomings, the game has the potential to improve with future updates and fixes.
