Valve’s decision to reduce the number of rounds in CS2 matches from 30 to 24 has resulted in faster gameplay, but professional players are not happy with the new MR12 format. This format, previously used in Counter-Strike: 1.6 and now in VALORANT, has received criticism from pros who believe there could have been alternative solutions to shorten matches without changing the round format.
Before August 2015, professional CS:GO matches lasted around 45 minutes. Valve could have considered reverting to the previous format by reducing smoke duration and keeping the 1:45 round timer, which would have been a less drastic change for the pros.
There are several reasons why professional players dislike the MR12 format. Firstly, it becomes challenging to make a comeback in the second half if the first half didn’t go well, as there are fewer rounds remaining to turn the tide. Secondly, Valve made no adjustments to the game’s economy despite implementing MR12, which was designed for shorter matches.
Valve argued that the game’s economy was already suitable for resolving matches with fewer rounds and claimed that shorter matches allow casual players to play more frequently. However, many professionals, including FaZe Clan’s ropz, have contested this claim.
While it seems unlikely that Valve will revert CS2 back to MR15 and abandon MR12, there is still a possibility for the developer to consider adjusting the round timer and C4 timer to match the early days of CS:GO, taking into account the feedback from professional players.
