A former GameStop employee, who goes by the username u/AwkwardlyDead on Reddit, recently received death threats after attempting to explain why a Nintendo Switch game was packaged in a disc envelope. The incident occurred on October 12th when a Reddit user shared a picture of their newly purchased game, which came in an envelope inside a case. While some Redditors made jokes about GameStop’s service, others speculated on the reason behind this packaging choice.
According to AwkwardlyDead, this packaging procedure is standard practice when a new game is sold out at a GameStop store. The last box displayed on the shelf usually has its cartridge removed and stored in an envelope for safekeeping. Ideally, the cartridge should be taken out of the envelope before being sold, but in this particular instance, it seems that someone overlooked this step and left it inside.
However, as AwkwardlyDead explained, they have no control over GameStop’s practices and cannot change them. Despite this, some users resorted to sending death threats to AwkwardlyDead, prompting the moderators of the r/gaming subreddit to lock the thread. It is worth noting that AwkwardlyDead is not even a current GameStop employee, making these threats even more unwarranted and ineffective.
Speculation arose that these death threats may have come from “memestock cultists from superstonk” who believe AwkwardlyDead is spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) about GameStop. It is concerning that individuals who are invested in GameStop’s stock would resort to such extreme measures over anecdotes shared by former employees.
