Destiny 2’s New Player Experience: Confusing and Frustrating

Derek Morgan

Destiny 2 has always had a poor new player experience, leaving players feeling disoriented and confused. The game thrusts you into the action without any context, and many players find this feature terrible.

Every time a new season or expansion is released, players are forced to play through a cutscene and mission upon launching the game. This can be overwhelming for new or returning players who are unfamiliar with the game mechanics and may not even realize they have the option to leave these missions.

One Reddit user suggested that players should have the ability to manually launch all the content instead. They also mentioned that the removal of multiple campaigns from the game has made it difficult to follow the storyline.

To make matters worse, if you’ve been away for multiple seasons or expansions, you’ll be bombarded with multiple cutscenes and missions every time you log in. This not only adds to the confusion but also becomes incredibly annoying for players who just want to catch up on what they’ve missed.

It’s no surprise that almost every Destiny 2 player agrees that the new player experience in the game “sucks.” While Bungie has introduced a timeline with playable missions to help understand the story better, it doesn’t alleviate the frustration of being forced to play something else.

Fortunately, there is a glimmer of hope. Starting from The Final Shape release on Feb. 24, 2024, Destiny 2 will change its seasonal model to have three episodes throughout the year instead of traditional seasons. These episodes will be “playable standalone” and can be experienced in any order, regardless of how long you’ve been playing Destiny. This change aims to make the new and returning player experience more straightforward and enjoyable.
