Embark Studios, the creators of the highly anticipated FPS game THE FINALS, have faced backlash for their use of AI-generated voices in the game. However, they have clarified that their intention is not to completely replace voice actors.
In a recent interview with Spotify, the game’s lead audio designers revealed that AI voices were used for most of the dialogue in THE FINALS. Only certain sounds like grunting and breathing were recorded in a studio. The designers believe that the AI-generated voices are of sufficient quality for the game.
Despite this assertion, many players who have tried the open beta of THE FINALS have expressed their dissatisfaction with the AI voices. The criticism has come from both regular players and industry veterans.
In response to the backlash, Embark’s director of communications, Sven Grundberg, stated in an interview with Axios that the game uses a combination of human and AI voicework. According to Grundberg, human voices add a depth that technology cannot replicate, but AI allows them to incorporate voices in situations where it would otherwise be challenging.
The implementation of voices, whether human or AI, is a time-consuming process. The audio designers mentioned that using AI can significantly reduce the time required, allowing them to focus on other aspects of the game’s development.
Grundberg emphasized that both human and AI voicework involve real people. Professionals and Embark employees contribute their voices to THE FINALS.
The use of AI-generated content has been a contentious topic in the entertainment industry, particularly in relation to fair work conditions for writers and actors. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes during the summer highlighted concerns about the use of AI in vocal and facial reconstruction.
The gaming industry also faced threats of a voice actor strike due to similar concerns about AI-generated content. The ethical and quality implications of AI technology are significant, and the extensive use of AI voices in a prominent esports title like THE FINALS raises further questions.
Despite the criticism, Embark Studios maintains that their goal is not to eliminate voice actors entirely. They believe that a combination of human and AI voicework can enhance the gaming experience and provide a balance between efficiency and quality.
