Fortnite developer Epic Games has responded to the massive criticism surrounding its latest update by promising to make adjustments to the game’s cosmetics instead of banning them based on age ratings.
The update, released on November 16, introduced new age ratings for custom maps and modes in Fortnite’s battle royale. Cosmetics were also labeled with age ratings, rendering them unusable on maps with different ratings. This decision sparked a strong reaction from the community, particularly regarding the restrictions placed on cosmetics, loading screens, and music.
In response to the backlash, Epic Games announced on November 16 that they will reinstate most of the restricted cosmetics over the next year. Approximately seven percent of Fortnite outfits can only be equipped on islands rated for teenagers. To address this issue, Epic Games plans to enable these outfits to be compatible with all ratings by automatically adjusting their appearance based on the island being played.
While this announcement has provided some relief to Fortnite players, concerns have been raised about the lack of mention regarding loading screens and music being released from the age rating restrictions. The iconic loading screen, featured since Save the World, was replaced in this update, and there is currently no plan to reverse this change along with the cosmetics. This update, dubbed by some players as “the worst update ever,” has somewhat tarnished the game’s attempt to return to its original map.
In addition to the cosmetic changes, the latest Fortnite update also introduced a feature allowing players to clip voice chats for more accurate reporting. However, it appears that even improvements like this can go unnoticed in situations where the overall update is met with such negative feedback.
