When it comes to Dota 2 in North America, Evil Geniuses (EG) has always been the dominant force. However, after a disappointing ninth-place finish at TI11, EG decided to part ways with their NA roster and move their Dota operations to South America. This change was seen as necessary by Fly, the captain of the former EG lineup, who felt that the partnership with EG had lost its excitement and was no longer mutually beneficial.
After a month without a sponsor, Shopify Rebellion stepped in and signed the former EG lineup, bringing a breath of fresh air to the team. Fly described the transition as “refreshing” and highlighted the support and enthusiasm shown by Shopify Rebellion. The new organization has provided additional support staff, sent extra personnel to tournaments, and has been there for the players even during tough times.
The addition of SabeRLight, who joined from TSM, also brought a new energy to the team. Fly praised the Czech offlaner’s awesome personality and the positive atmosphere he created within the team.
Unfortunately, Shopify Rebellion’s first year in Dota ended earlier than expected, with a tie for 13th place at TI 2023. Despite this setback, Fly expressed his appreciation for the fans and their support. The team had a challenging year overall, with their best placement being a second-place finish at DreamLeague Season 21.
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen if the Shopify Rebellion roster will stick together for the 2024 season or if major changes will be made. The core of Fly, Cr1t-, Arteezy, and Abed has been playing together for several seasons, and it may be time for a fresh start.
As the final stage of The International begins, eight teams are left competing for the Aegis at the Climate Pledge Arena this weekend.
