Fixing Dota 2 for New Players: Insights from BSJ

Tim Price

Dota 2 has long been considered a game that is difficult for new players to get into. However, Dota 2 personality Brian “BSJ” Canavan has some ideas on how to address this issue and make the game more accessible to newcomers.

In a recent blog post titled “Fresh Meat: Helping New Players in Dota 2” by Team Liquid, BSJ discusses the complexity of the game and the toxic nature of the community, which often discourages new players from continuing their Dota 2 journey.

One of the suggestions BSJ offers is to tweak the matchmaking system. He points out that players with similar Matchmaking Ratings (MMR) may not necessarily have the same level of skill. Some players may have spent thousands of hours playing against AI bots, while others may be relatively new to the game. By matching players based on both skill and the number of matches played, the playing field can be leveled, allowing new players to learn and improve alongside others who are at a similar stage.

BSJ also proposes the implementation of a reward system to incentivize new players. Similar to the old Battle Pass and Dota Plus challenges, these rewards would encourage players to achieve certain goals during their matches. This not only adds a sense of accomplishment but also helps players make better gameplay choices. However, BSJ advises new players not to prioritize challenges over their overall gameplay, as it can sometimes lead to suboptimal decision-making. Striking a balance between challenges and gameplay improvement is key.

Lastly, BSJ emphasizes the importance of experimentation for new players. With a vast array of heroes and items to choose from, trying out different strategies and learning from trial and error is crucial for improvement. Through this process, players will discover what works best for their chosen hero and what doesn’t, ultimately leading to growth and progress.

For more insights from BSJ and other valuable information, be sure to check out the full blog post on Team Liquid’s website. It’s a must-read for both new players and seasoned veterans looking to enhance their Dota 2 experience.
