Florida Mayhem Crowned OWL Champions 2023 with Dominant Victory over Houston Outlaws

Tim Price

Florida Mayhem emerged victorious in the Overwatch League’s sixth season, clinching the championship title in a thrilling showdown against the Houston Outlaws. Led by the exceptional DPS performance of Grand Finals MVP MER1T, the Mayhem secured a resounding 4-0 victory to claim their first-ever OWL championship.

The series initially seemed to favor the Houston Outlaws, with the renowned Someone, recently crowned regular season MVP, struggling to make an impact on Reinhardt. However, a pivotal role swap to Sigma and the outstanding play of MER1T turned the tide in Florida’s favor, leading them to secure the Control map. The momentum carried over to Blizzard World, where the Mayhem successfully held the Outlaws just before the third point and effortlessly pushed past it during their attack.

A nail-biting and closely contested match on Suravasa showcased another remarkable triple kill from MER1T on Bastion, securing the map and granting the Mayhem a commanding 3-0 lead. With only one map remaining to claim the title, Esperança became the stage for their coronation. Although the match remained fiercely competitive throughout, clutch performances from multiple Mayhem players ultimately secured the final two fight wins and solidified their championship victory.

Interestingly, this triumph signifies a remarkable journey for all four teams that finished in the bottom ranks during the inaugural year of the Overwatch League. From the winless Shanghai Dragons to the Florida Mayhem, each organization managed to rebuild their teams and achieve success, albeit at different paces. Nevertheless, they all persevered and ultimately claimed the coveted championship trophy.

Checkmate, one of the longest-serving members of the Mayhem, humorously described his experience with the team as “starting from rock bottom and riding the wave to the top.” He likened the moment of victory to a heart-stopping sensation, with blurred vision and dizziness overwhelming him.

Despite the elation, Checkmate exuded confidence in their championship win, stating that they knew they would emerge victorious “as soon as we formed the roster and played three days of scrims.”

Ultimately, it was the charismatic Someone who spoke the most, reflecting on his journey from Contenders to the Overwatch League. Initially met with skepticism from professionals and fans alike, he used this doubt as motivation to prove them wrong. As he defeated increasingly formidable opponents, his momentum continued to grow.

This momentum culminated in one of the most lopsided finals in OWL history, with both the 2023 MVP and Dennis Hawelka Award winner proudly bringing the championship trophy back to Florida from Toronto.
