Former League of Legends World Champion Reaches Challenger Again After 5 Years of Retirement

Derek Morgan

A former League of Legends World Champion, Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong, has made a remarkable comeback by reaching the Challenger rank on the South Korean server. This achievement comes five years after his retirement from professional play, proving that he can still dominate without being part of a competitive team.

In a livestream on October 10, Ambition expressed pure joy as he finally reached Challenger, breaking free from the Diamond and Master ranks where he had been stuck for years. This accomplishment is even more significant considering it had been eight years since he last achieved this feat.

Ambition, who is now 30 years old, was a former pro player for various LCK teams, including Samsung Galaxy, where he became a World champion in 2017. After his last season with Gen.G in 2018, he decided to retire, but he remains signed with the organization as a League streamer.

Despite no longer participating in international tournaments, Ambition has proven that he is still a formidable competitor. On October 9, he reached the top of the South Korean ladder, showcasing his exceptional skills.

However, Ambition’s joy was short-lived as he has since played several more games and dropped back to the Grandmaster tier. Nevertheless, he still holds a prominent position within that rank and is determined to climb back up to Challenger, currently sitting around 100 spots away.

It is worth noting that some League players argue that this may be the opportune time to reach the top of the South Korean ladder due to the ongoing 2023 World Championship. The region’s best players are currently focused on training for this crucial tournament, leaving less time for ladder grinding. Nevertheless, South Korea is renowned as the most competitive region in the world, making Ambition’s achievement all the more impressive.

The League of Legends World Championship began on October 10 with the Play-In stage and will continue until November 19.
