G2 Esports has given European League of Legends fans renewed hope after claiming their first victory at the Worlds 2023 Swiss stage. The LEC representatives emerged triumphant in a heated best-of-one series against Korean team Dplus KIA.
In the game, Hans Sama showcased his signature champion, Draven, and G2 played aggressively, securing kills to accelerate his growth and maintain a lead throughout most of the match. Although they made some mistakes that gave DK opportunities to make a comeback, the Korean fourth seed failed to capitalize on them, much to the relief of European fans.
G2 made a crucial error by flipping the Baron Nashor early in the game, allowing DK to secure it along with a significant lead. This brought the gold deficit to an even level, but G2 managed to regain control through strategic picks and teamfighting around dragons. Eventually, they overwhelmed DK and emerged victorious.
The rivalry between G2 and DK is one of the most intense in the League of Legends community. They have faced each other in all three previous Worlds they both participated in, with G2 emerging as the winners in 2019, while DK claimed victory in 2020 and 2022.
With this win, G2 becomes the second Western team to advance to the 1-0 bracket, following Cloud9’s victory against MAD Lions. On the other hand, DK joins Team Liquid and Team BDS in the 0-1 bracket.
The Worlds 2023 Swiss stage continues today with three more games remaining in the schedule. The draw for the second round of the stage will take place afterward, and the tournament will resume on October 20th.
