Goombas in Super Mario Wonder: Biting Back and Bringing Back Classic Enemies

Xavier Ward

The iconic Goombas in the Super Mario games have always played a crucial role in introducing players to enemy stomping and platforming challenges. In the upcoming game, Super Mario Wonder, these seemingly simple enemies are given a new twist – they can now bite Mario, causing him harm. This addition aligns with the original intention of Nintendo since the days of the NES, as revealed by the game’s art director, Masanobu Sato.

During the development phase of Super Mario Bros, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, explained that Mario takes damage when he bumps into a Goomba from the side because the Goombas bite him. However, this biting action was not visible in the earlier 16 and 32-bit titles due to hardware limitations. The recent advancements in technology have allowed the developers to finally bring this concept to life in Super Mario Wonder.

Another exciting addition to the game is the introduction of a new enemy, the Roller Troopa. This enemy is a variant of the Koopa Troopa and was initially considered during the development of Super Mario World. However, it was ultimately replaced by the belly-sliding Super Koopa. Super Mario Wonder brings back this concept and presents players with a fresh challenge.

While Super Mario Wonder is taking the series in a new direction, it is clear that the game’s creative ideas are rooted in classic concepts. The development team, consisting of staff who have worked on previous Mario games, aims to evolve the series while paying tribute to its legacy. By giving creative freedom to the team, Super Mario Wonder promises to deliver an entirely new and exciting experience for fans.

Super Mario Wonder is set to launch on October 20th, and fans can look forward to experiencing the biting Goombas and the roller-skating Roller Troopas firsthand.
