Revamping Organized Play for a Thrilling Standard Experience
The Standard format in Magic: The Gathering has undergone significant changes to enhance the competitive play experience. These improvements were unveiled by William “Huey” Jensen, the Director of Magic: The Gathering organized play programs, during the 2023 MTG World Championship. The focus of phase two is to support organized play at all levels, from local game stores to prestigious Pro Tours.
Weekly WotC-Sponsored Events at Local Game Stores
Starting in February with the release of Murders at Karlov Manor, local game stores will host weekly WotC-sponsored events as part of the revived Standard Showdown program. Standard Showdown, initially introduced in 2016, offers players the opportunity to compete in the Standard format on a weekly basis. Participants will have a chance to win promo cards and other exciting prizes.
Store Championships: A Pathway to Tournaments and Pro Tours
Store Championships are also undergoing changes to align with the Standard Constructed play. This adjustment allows players at the local level to qualify for higher-level tournaments such as Regional Qualifiers and the Pro Tour. Top finishers in Store Championships will receive exclusive promos and other enticing rewards.
Regional Championship Qualifiers at Local Game Stores
From January to March, the final rounds of Regional Championship Qualifiers for the 2023-2024 season will take place at local game stores. These qualifiers will showcase the Standard Constructed format, providing players with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and earn a spot in the Regional Championships.
75K Standard Constructed Tournament at MagicCon Chicago
MagicCon Chicago, scheduled from February 23 to 25, will feature a special 75K Standard Constructed tournament. This event offers players the chance to compete for substantial cash prizes and potentially secure an invite to the Pro Tour. It is the first large-scale event dedicated to the Standard format in quite some time, making it an exciting prospect for players.
Global Regional Championship Tournaments
Following the release of Pro Tour Outlaws of Thunder Junction in the second quarter of 2024, global Regional Championship tournaments will take place. These tournaments will feature both Standard Constructed and Draft formats, providing players with diverse gameplay experiences.
These changes to Magic: The Gathering organized play will be implemented for the 2023-2024 season, commencing at the beginning of the year. With a renewed focus on competitive play and a range of enticing events, players can look forward to an exhilarating Standard format experience.
