League of Legends Champions in 2023: Simpler and Less Frustrating

Derek Morgan

This year, League of Legends saw a decrease in the number of new champion releases compared to 2022. However, players have praised Riot Games’ approach, believing that the champions released in 2023 are simpler and less frustrating.

A Reddit post on November 16 sparked a discussion among players, with many agreeing that this year’s champions were better received than those from the previous year. One player noted, “There has been less ranting about this year’s champ compared to last year.”

The top comment in the discussion highlighted the sentiment that the 2023 champions have a simpler design compared to the overloaded and complex champions of 2022. Last year, champions like Zeri, K’Sante, and Bel’Veth had intricate mechanics and snowball potential, but their capabilities often became overwhelming. Zeri, in particular, underwent numerous updates throughout the year.

In contrast, this year’s champions, such as Naafiri, Milio, and Briar, are easier to learn and play. While Naafiri may have some complexity, overall, the champions of 2023 are more manageable and enjoyable to play against. They still offer strength and fun without breaking the meta like Zeri or K’Sante did.

One player summed it up by saying, “At least the new champions don’t have anything really frustrating. A few of last year’s champions can be very frustrating.” However, it was acknowledged that Naafiri’s kit can also be somewhat frustrating, as pointed out by other players.

Riot Games is expected to release one more champion in 2023, Hwei. According to League’s October roadmap, Hwei is described as a “high-complexity champion,” deviating from the trend of simpler designs seen this year.
