League of Legends’ latest champion, Hwei, has been generating a lot of excitement within the community. As more details about this complex hero’s abilities emerge, it has been revealed that one interesting ability was left out during the design process.
Lead designer August Browning shared insights on November 19th, explaining that Hwei’s initial kit included a “stealth” ability involving a raincloud. This utility spell would summon a depressed raincloud, granting Hwei temporary invisibility and allowing him to maneuver undetected or escape from danger.
However, this ability, known as the “depressed raincloud,” proved to be problematic and was ultimately scrapped. August described it as a fun addition but acknowledged the balance issues associated with yet another stealth-based champion in League. Additionally, considering Hwei’s already somber nature depicted in his Worlds cinematic trailer and lore, the inclusion of a raincloud might have been excessive.
Interestingly, this stealth-like ability bears resemblance to one of Invoker’s skills from Dota 2, a hero that inspired the creation of Hwei. Invoker’s “Ghost Walk” allows him to disappear from sight, although nearby enemies can still track his movements due to a slowing effect.
Considering Hwei’s extensive kit of ten abilities, the potential for complex combos, and the community’s general aversion to stealth mechanics, it is perhaps for the best that the raincloud ability was discarded before going live.
