Immersive Experiences and Faker’s Legacy
As I embark on my journey to Seoul for the 2023 League of Legends World Championship finals, I am already encountering numerous conversations about the event. From encounters at the airport to conversations with locals, the excitement surrounding the tournament is palpable.
During my check-in at Rome airport, an elderly couple from Hawaii recognized the World Championship logo on my jacket, sparking a conversation about the event. Later, a young Korean couple in the security line asked if I was attending the finals in Korea.
On my flight, I sat next to a Korean old lady who couldn’t speak English but recognized the League of Legends logo on my jacket. Although we couldn’t communicate effectively, she shared some delicious snacks with me.
Upon landing in Seoul, I found myself stuck in rush-hour traffic. However, this provided an opportunity to chat with my driver, who eagerly shared stories about his nephew’s love for League of Legends. Finally, I arrived at my hotel where the receptionist and her colleague enthusiastically discussed the tournament, including the opening ceremony featuring NewJeans.
While NewJeans is a globally recognized name, it is Faker who truly captures the attention of League of Legends fans. After a decade of competing, Faker’s name is synonymous with the game, especially in his home country. The impact of gaming is evident throughout the city, with people proudly wearing LCK team merchandise and a bustling market for League and VALORANT-related products.
My exploration of the Worlds’ Playground further solidified Seoul as the birthplace of esports. The partnership between Riot Games and the Korea Tourism Organization has created an immersive experience for League of Legends fans like no other.
The HiKR building, where the exhibition takes place, offers a multi-floor journey through the history and excitement of Worlds. From the staircase adorned with the names of past winners to interactive photo booths, art stations, and LCK team stands, every floor is filled with captivating attractions. Ceiling-high screens showcase the most thrilling moments of the tournament, while a quiz tests visitors’ knowledge of the LCK and the host region.
On the fifth floor, HEARTSTEEL’s playground awaits, offering not only band-themed donuts and collectible cards but also a unique photo booth experience that challenges visitors to strike creative poses while looking up at the ceiling.
This exhibition is a testament to the passion and recognition of League of Legends in Seoul. It is an extraordinary experience that sets the stage for an eventful week leading up to the World Championship finals. I eagerly anticipate what Riot Games and Seoul have in store for fans like me.
