A recent discovery in Mortal Kombat 1 has left players frustrated and disappointed. In the game’s Invasions mode, a chest has been found that can only be opened by owning a specific DLC character. This means that players without this character are unable to access the cosmetic skins for Johnny Cage and General Shao contained within.
The character in question is Shang Tsung, who is available as a DLC purchase or as a pre-order bonus. To open the chest, players must perform Shang Tsung’s second fatality on it. This effectively puts a paywall on the chest and its contents, leaving many fans unhappy with this design choice from NetherRealm Studios.
Players are concerned about the future of the game and hope that it does not become filled with microtransactions. The decision to lock the chest behind a DLC character has been described as “despicable and cheap” by one user, who believes that the Invasions mode is not being given the same consideration as the base game.
Mortal Kombat 1 was released on September 19, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. In Invasions mode, players navigate a board, interact with items, and unlock chests. NetherRealm Studios has not yet commented on the issue, so it remains unclear whether the paywall was an intentional choice.
