Magic: The Gathering (MTG) designers Mark Rosewater and Mike Turian recently addressed community concerns regarding the introduction of Play boosters in the game. During an episode of MTGWeekly, they also hinted at significant changes in store for the new player experience.
Play boosters are set to replace Draft and Set boosters with the release of Murders at Markov Manor. The aim is to simplify products for both retailers and consumers. However, the biggest impact will be on limited gameplay. This led to questions about how the new booster would affect the new player experience.
In response, Blake Rasmussen provided teasers about upcoming improvements to the new player experience. The team at Wizards of the Coast (WotC) acknowledges that the current state of Magic for new players could use some extra attention.
Starter packs were intentionally designed to be less complex, but WotC has realized that simplicity may not always be the best approach. The team now understands that what truly attracts players to Magic is excitement, rather than low complexity.
This new philosophy at WotC will result in a yet-to-be-revealed Magic product. It remains unclear whether Starter decks will undergo a rework or be retired, similar to Draft and Set boosters.
No specific timeline for these changes to the new player experience has been announced. Play boosters are set to launch alongside the release of Murders at Markov Manor.
