The next Mass Effect game has fans returning to the original franchise, but one title stands out as the hardest to beat. Mass Effect 2 is unanimously considered the toughest game on the franchise’s maximum difficulty mode, Insanity. Let’s explore why this game is so challenging compared to the others.
From a game mechanics perspective, Mass Effect has become more balanced in favor of AI opponents. The first game heavily favored biotics, but Mass Effect 2 changed that. Biotics become almost useless in the latter stages of the game due to the introduction of Collectors and their shielding designed to resist this trait. Even if you’re not using biotics, the way defenses work leads to spending more time out of cover, which is not ideal when your health bar is fragile.
Mass Effect 3, on the other hand, offers a more balanced experience. Any build can be viable, and the main challenges come from navigating maps restricted to buildings and structures. Missions on Sur’Kesh, Grissom Academy, and Earth are particularly tough.
Combat fluidity is another issue in the original trilogy. Shepard controls feel sluggish, making it difficult to move and find cover quickly. This adds to the frustration of constantly getting hit before finding cover again. Mass Effect: Andromeda, however, improved this aspect significantly.
If you’re planning to tackle the original trilogy on Insanity difficulty, be prepared for the toughest challenge in Mass Effect 2. Brace yourself for hours of brutality and slow progress. But remember, you’re not alone in this struggle. Many others have suffered through it as well.
