Media Molecule, the developer behind popular games like LittleBigPlanet and Dreams, is reportedly laying off around 20 employees, which accounts for approximately 15 to 20 percent of its total staff. The decision was made in an internal meeting on October 24th, and if accurate, the company’s workforce will decrease from 135 to around 115 employees.
Media Molecule, based in the UK, is best known for creating the imaginative world of LittleBigPlanet. Since its founding in 2006, the studio has released several games, with LittleBigPlanet becoming a flagship title for PlayStation consoles after Sony acquired the company in 2010.
In addition to LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule also developed Dreams, a sandbox game that allowed players to create their own games using a variety of tools. However, support for Dreams was discontinued earlier this year, and the studio has not provided any details about its new project.
While fans eagerly await news of a fourth installment in the LittleBigPlanet series, rumors have circulated about a potential new game due to a job listing at Sumo Digital, another studio involved in the franchise. However, no official announcements have been made regarding a new game.
Layoffs have unfortunately become a common occurrence in the gaming industry, affecting both independent studios and major publishers. Media Molecule has yet to confirm or deny the layoff rumors, and further information is awaited from both Sony and the studio itself.
