Modern Warfare 3 Introduces Aftermarket Parts to Customize Weapons

superadmin

Just days before the multiplayer reveal of Modern Warfare 3 at CoD Next on Oct. 5, Sledgehammer Games has provided details about one of the new features in the game’s highly customizable Gunsmith called Aftermarket Parts.

MW3’s Gunsmith is similar to Modern Warfare 2’s, where attachments are unlocked as weapons level up. The attachment options include Barrel, Muzzle, Magazine, Optic, Laser, and Rear Grip, just like in MW2.

However, Sledgehammer Games has introduced a new twist to the Gunsmith with Aftermarket Parts. These parts use Conversion Kits that can drastically change a weapon’s functionality, such as converting it from semi-auto to full-auto.

According to Nick Carraro, a systems designer at Sledgehammer Games, Aftermarket Parts are like remixes for the guns. They allow players to revisit a weapon they have already mastered and provide a completely new way to interact with it, beyond what regular attachments can offer. Carraro describes Aftermarket Parts as powerful and meaningful changes to the weapons.

To unlock the Aftermarket Part Conversion Kits, players must complete unique challenges that become available once a weapon reaches its maximum level. For example, a challenge could be to get 25 kills while hip firing or using Tac-Stance.

Once the Aftermarket Parts are unlocked, players have a wide range of options for customizing their guns. They need to pay attention to and cycle through the weapon’s attachment selection when equipping Conversion Kits. New Aftermarket Parts may become available as attachments that were not accessible with the base weapon, and some previously available attachments may become restricted. This is because the weapon’s fundamental characteristics change, and so do the ways it can be modified.

Another change in MW3’s Gunsmith is that attachment unlocks no longer require players to use a specific weapon. Once an attachment is unlocked on one gun and is applicable to another, it will be available without any additional work.

Additionally, in MW3, 1X scopes no longer slow down aim-down-sight speed as they did in MW2. This means that using these scopes allows for faster target acquisition than ever before.

Players will have the opportunity to experience the MW3 Gunsmith when the beta goes live on PlayStation this Friday, Oct. 6.
