Modern Warfare 3 has earned the unfortunate title of being the worst Call of Duty game ever, and it’s not even close. With a dismal score of 53 out of 100 on Metacritic, it’s clear that both critics and players alike are highly disappointed with this latest installment.
The user score on Metacritic paints an even bleaker picture, with MW3 receiving a pitiful 1.6 out of 10. This indicates that the community truly despises the game and its shortcomings.
Comparatively, the closest Call of Duty title in terms of score is Call of Duty: Vanguard, which managed to salvage a score of 73 after a rough start. This puts it a significant 20 points ahead of MW3. It’s worth noting that MW3 falls a staggering 35 points below the 2009 game of the same name and also lags behind the revamped Modern Warfare titles.
One of the major disappointments for fans was the reintroduction of maps from previous CoD games. While the inclusion of iconic maps like Highrise and Favela initially generated excitement, players now feel that these maps have been overused and lack originality, ultimately detracting from the overall experience.
Even the multiplayer gameplay couldn’t save MW3 from criticism. The game’s Armory System, which forces players to adopt a specific playstyle, was heavily criticized by the player base. Many players are already pleading with the developers to remove it entirely.
MW3’s single-player campaign also faced harsh scrutiny. Fans lambasted the lazy design and criticized the new feature called Open Combat Missions. These missions, which make up almost half of the story, were despised by players as they deviated from the linear path and failed to deliver an engaging experience.
Overall, it is evident that MW3 was rushed and failed to meet the expectations of both critics and players. Despite the developer’s attempts to defend the game, the reviews speak for themselves. Activision will need to come up with something truly groundbreaking to redeem themselves after such a disastrous start to the MW3 cycle.
