Wizards of the Coast has acknowledged concerns from Magic: The Gathering players regarding the status of MTG Arena following multiple issues that arose during the game’s fifth-anniversary celebration.
The celebration was meant to be a modest one, with daily rewards ranging from a Rare Wildcard to a card style. However, problems started to emerge in other areas of the digital card game, particularly within the Premium Wilds of the Eldraine (WOE) Draft. As a result, the Draft was temporarily disabled to address the issue. Although it was eventually reinstated and players were compensated with a Premium Draft token and XP, the main bug causing the Draft issues remains unresolved.
Executive producer Chris Kiritz stated that the team is actively working on resolving the issue but does not have an official timeline yet. While the game is functioning well for many players, certain areas are still experiencing problems that the team is currently troubleshooting. Kiritz expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused and assured players that efforts are being made to rectify the situation.
On September 19, an update was implemented to perform general maintenance on the database services. However, despite months of testing, the live server did not respond as expected. To address this ongoing issue, the MTG Arena staff established a special PO Live team to assist with troubleshooting. They managed to resolve the Draft problem by installing a new Draft code.
As of now, the player inbox remains disabled, preventing players from receiving the Anniversary Week rewards. The Anniversary celebration has been put on hold until all issues have been resolved and the MTG Arena team is confident in the system’s functionality.
A patch was released on September 28 to begin fixing the underlying issue. Additional updates are scheduled over the next few weeks, although none of them should require a complete system shutdown.
