Nexus Blitz Returns as a Rotating Game Mode, but Lack of Changes Could Be a Problem

superadmin

Riot Games has announced that Nexus Blitz will be returning as a rotating game mode in October. However, the lack of major changes for its rerelease could pose a significant problem. While the spirit and overall gameplay will remain unchanged, the absence of updates may hinder its success as a staple rotating mode.

Typically, when game modes or similar features return to League of Legends after a long absence, they undergo reworks and updates. For example, the iconic AD carry item Statik Shiv was reintroduced in season 13 with significant changes to its stats and abilities. In contrast, Nexus Blitz is set to return without any major alterations.

Nexus Blitz was initially released in 2018 as a permanent game mode, but it failed to resonate with the community once the event ended and there were no quests to pursue. When it made a comeback in 2020, the developers revamped the map, improved events, and introduced enticing rewards. However, the mode still has its flaws.

One major issue is the snowballing effect, which has been prevalent since Nexus Blitz’s inception. The events in the game mode often exacerbate this problem, putting the losing team at a severe disadvantage. For instance, events like Scuttle Crab Racing can further tilt the scales in favor of the winning team, making it difficult for the losing team to mount a comeback.

Another concern is the impact of event spawn points on the outcome of mini-games. If the losing team witnesses a valuable objective spawning in the enemy’s territory, their chances of winning become slim. This imbalance in event spawns can heavily influence the course of the game.

Additionally, the rewards for winning events are often overpowered. For example, obtaining an Elder Dragon execute buff, which is a game-deciding buff in Summoner’s Rift, can be acquired mid-game in Nexus Blitz. This can lead to one team easily overpowering their opponents and swiftly ending the match.

While Nexus Blitz is beloved by many players, its flaws and lack of updates may deter newcomers from fully enjoying the game mode. Without addressing these issues, Nexus Blitz could face a similar fate as other game modes like Hexakill and Twisted Treeline.
