Nintendo is set to release the classic Nintendo 64 game, Jet Force Gemini, on its online subscription service for the Nintendo Switch. However, in Japan, players will need to download a separate app to access the game. This app is specifically designed for adults only and will be available on November 30th, alongside the launch of Jet Force Gemini. The reason for this separate app is that the game has received a Z-rating in Japan, which means it is restricted to players aged 18 and above. As a result, Nintendo cannot offer it through the regular service accessible to children. This is similar to the situation with Goldeneye 007, another N64 game that was not added to the service in Japan earlier this year.
The adult-only app serves as a means for Nintendo to distribute both Jet Force Gemini and Goldeneye 007 in Japan. While effective, it is somewhat amusing that adult Switch owners in Japan have to download a separate app just to play these two games. Interestingly, both games were developed by Rare, the same studio.
Jet Force Gemini will be available in the West in December, and players will only need a subscription to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to access it. Originally released in 1999, Jet Force Gemini is a third-person shooter with action-adventure elements. Players embark on a mission to save a race of aliens from an evil insectoid army, exploring 15 different worlds along the way. The game also features a deathmatch multiplayer mode, which will hopefully include online support, similar to Goldeneye 007.
As Rare is now owned by Microsoft, any of the studio’s games added to the Switch’s online service require approval from Xbox. Fortunately, Microsoft and Nintendo have a good working relationship, as evidenced by other Rare games like Goldeneye 007 and Banjo-Kazooie being available on the service. Fans are hopeful that more Rare titles, such as Banjo-Tooie and Diddy Kong Racing, will also be added in the future.
